Butter for the Holidays

There is something so wonderful about whipping up your own homemade raw milk butter.

The bright yellow hues, the kneading out the buttermilk and forming the butter in your bare hands…it’s my favorite!

I proudly step back to look at it and say to myself “It’s so beautiful.”

It’s really not so silly to think.

Our ancestors have made butter for centuries and it was a staple item in the kitchen.

I know those women from the past looked at their homemade butter with the same admiration.

Having butter and other animal rich fats in the kitchen was what sustained families through cold winters, and lean crop years.

Butter, homemade and raw, is a necessary part of our diets.

Plus…it’s delicious!

This year while whippin’ some up for Thanksgiving, I’m filled with gratitude for the basics.

I used to loath cooking meals, it felt pointless.

It was rushed and the food was hoovered rather than enjoyed.

On top of that everyone walked away feeling sick from the processed food.

I wanted to change some traditions. . .take it back to basics.

Which consisted of homemade. From scratch.

Creating my own pie crust from my own homemade butter & freshly ground wheat brings so much pleasure.

It’s how my ancestors before me made it.

I can picture them, with their old cast iron stoves and aprons creating for their loved ones.

Where it used to be a chore, it now is an opportunity to give to my family in love.

My pies I trim with fork patterns in the crust.

Sourdough rolls poof up from the pan after a long day of rising.

And maybe a fresh harvested chicken that was raised on our own land, rather than a store bought turkey.

I look forward to placing the fresh raw butter on the table and slathering a sourdough roll with it.

It’s more than food. It’s the whole experience.

To appreciate those who came before me.

Do I have a perfect family tree? Far from it.

There are a lot of ‘nuts’ in the tree if you get my drift ;)

But I now see that without them I wouldn’t be here today.

I can love them just for that simple truth.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. What about you?

Sending you and yours lots of love,

xoxo
