Daily Routine for Breezy
When you are in a good routine, you feel the difference right? So do cows; crazy enough!
Fun fact: structure affects milk production.
Let us walk you through a standard day with Breezy (she’s our friendliest cow!) and the rest of our cows.
Alma is up at 2am to do his personal study time, eat and get ready for the day.
Can I just say I sure appreciate that he has a passion for being a farmer. I do NOT like going outside when it’s freezing cold!
He heads out the door and scrubs and sanitizes tank, pipes and equipment. His process is pretty darn cool and very thorough. Good job Farmer Alma!
Once the barn is prepped he brings up the cows, cleaning the stalls as he goes.
Depending on moods (no pun intended) it takes between 1-2 hrs milking. Sometimes a cow can wake up on the wrong side of the hay! When they’re grumpy and kickin’ it takes lots of patience. Fortunately that isn’t often. We also hand pick our cows so we buy the best of the best.
After milking, especially in the winter, Alma makes sure they have plenty of clean straw to bed down in.
He’ll first scrape pens. This was a big reason we decided to keep a strip of concrete to help keep their beds clean.
Once scraped and bedded, he checks to make sure they have fresh hay to eat. Winter in Utah means no grazing on pasture.
Then they spend the rest of their day relaxing and chewing cud and lookin’ cute.
Just like cows, I know schedule is so crucial to mental/physical/spiritual wellbeing for our family.
Alma and I really work on our routine to keep with a set schedule. It often means turning down different events that go late into the night (10 pm is late for us Ha! Ha!) or being the first to leave from parties.
It isn’t perfect, but man if we don’t get our sleep - we feel it. Cows get milked no matter what.
Living a life of “early to bed, early to rise” isn’t just for farmers. It is beneficial for anyone who has a desire to be more productive, happy and balanced.
What are some of you favorite things you do for routine? Have you noticed improved living because of commitment to a schedule? Let us know! We love hearing from you!
