Lilly Dog
The Farm wouldn’t be the same without our Lilly Dog.
She is the sweetest thing, and everyone can’t help but love her!
We often get asked by customers if it would be okay if Lilly went home them.
I laugh and say naw, we’ll keep her.
I remember the day Alma told me we were getting a new dog.
Me being me, I was happy to get another animal but was bummed when he told me she wasn’t a puppy.
It was 2015, and she was close to 18 months old.
It was the first time she’d ever left her mamma.
She came and was terrified of everything. We had to keep her inside the house so she wouldn’t run away!
It took a few months for her to really accept her new home.
Once she did calmed down we noticed that she loved me especially - I’m her human - and the kids.
Alma was slightly disappointed.
Just earlier that year he lost his companion dog.
She, Nix, would follow him everywhere. And loosing her was quite the blow.
He quickly accepted that this dog was different.
Even to this day, Lilly won’t go to the farm with him.
Unless of course me or the kids are with him!
He still loves Lilly, even if she snubs him. Lol
It is a little sad because Alma is so sweet to her.
I think she had a really bad experience with a man as a young pup.
I will forever be grateful for her loyalty to the kids.
More than once, Lilly saved my kids lives.
Once with my youngest son, and twice with my youngest daughter.
I’ll share the later story with you.
It was a beautiful Summer morning and the kids went out to play while I finished making bread.
This was a common happenstance and nothing out of the ordinary.
I remember having the thought to check on the kids and looked out and saw them playing.
Seeing the kids playing I was content.
Little bit later my phone rings.
Mr. Greg is on the phone asking if I knew that I was missing my toddler.
My stomach was in my throat and I instantly was sick.
I flew up the road in my honda minivan and sure enough there was my baby girl.
Not much to say. I was mortified she had gotten up the road, relieved that she was safe and full of shame all in one.
My neighbor was very kind and just shared how amazed he was with Lilly dog.
I asked what he meant.
He told me how he saw Lilly first and that she was very determinedly standing between my daughter and his truck.
I embraced my dog and my daughter with tears in my eyes.
She is the ultimate mothering dog
This memory is a beautiful reminder to me of why I love animals so much.
They really do know what’s going on and how to keep watch over us.
We love our Lilly! She has so many great qualities.
Next time your at the farm and see Lilly be sure and give her a good rub down. She loves to be loved!
xoxo,
